Reaching the bottom of the dramatic Samaria Gorge, walkers are greeted by the welcoming tavernas and cool waters of the small white-washed village of Agia Roumeli.
While a few vehicles can be found in the small streets here, with no road access to nearest villages, the only way to travel beyond the confines of the settlement is by taking a boat along the coast to nearby Loutro or Chora Sfakion.
There are a number of places to stay here and plenty of tavernas to refresh day-trip walkers hungry after their Samaria Gorge Hike before they catch the boat back to their buses... but by far the best time to be here is when the last ferry has departed and the village returns to its sleepy Mediterranean norm.
