Built in the form of a Latin cross the Accademia dell'Arte del Disegno, often called simply “The Accademia” was the first drawing academy in Europe. Patronised by those renowned art lovers, the Medicis, it is home to Michelangelo’s David along with other Renaissance works.

Founded in 1561 the Accademia dell'Arte del Disegno was the first of its kind in Europe. A place for male artists to work it admitted Artemisa Gentileschi, a superb female Renaissance artist, in the early 1600s.

In 1784 Pietro Leopoldo decreed that all schools of drawing be housed under one roof; the Accademia was chose and renamed the Accademia di Belle Arti Firenze.

Today there is a small collection of Michelangelos including the famous statue of David which is housed in a tribuna especially built for it (previously it was in Piazza della Signora).

It also houses other notable Renaissance works by Paolo Uccello, Domenico Ghirlandaio, Sandro Botticelli and Andrea del Sarto, along with the original plaster for Giambologna's Rape of the Sabine Women.

Over the tears the Accademia has become one of the main museums in Florence thanks to the acquisition of some extraordinary masterpieces. You can see the Pieta by Giovanni da Milano, the Annunciation by Lorenzo Monaco, the splendid Cassone Adimari which shows a marriage procession (c. 1450) and the Madonna of the Sea attributed to Botticelli.

It is of course David that people come to see; for its own protection the statue was Piazza della Signora where it had stood for 400 years.
