Local Traditions

The UAE are a federation of 7 Muslim states – Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah, Fujairah, Ras al Khaimah, Ajman and Umm al-Quwain, who display traditional hospitality to visitors in the Arab style. Extremely cosmopolitan with ex-pat Asian workers far and away outnumbering UAE nationals the region provides a hotchpotch of cultures to get to grips with. As with any country the visitor should respect local traditions which in the UAE means respectful dress and no public displays of affection, however in large cities such as Dubai this is less of an issue as in some of the less-visited smaller Emirates. Women should cover their heads before entering a mosque and all should remove shoes.
