Money, Currency and Cards in Zimbabwe

Local Currency

Zimbabwe Dollar (ZWD)

General Advice

On August 1, 2006, the Zimbabwean dollar was revalued and three zeroes were truncated to create a new currency. As at August 21, 2006, only the new banknotes are legal tender. Remain cautious, as counterfeit notes have been found in circulation. The attested new notes have a watermark and a security strip. Most hotel charges for foreigners are based on a U.S. dollar rate and must be paid with credit cards or internationally convertible currency (typically U.S. dollars or British pounds).  Seek advice from local tour operators and travel experts as soon as you arrive in the country.

Money Exchange

Travellers should not attempt to change currency at unregistered currency exchange offices or outlets. It is unlawful to exchange foreign currency for Zimbabwean dollars with anyone other than a legitimate currency dealer affiliated with the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe. Authorized currency dealers include the major banks, such as Standard Chartered and Barclays. Seek advice from local tour operators and travel experts as soon as you arrive in the country.

ATM Availability

ATMs are becoming more widely available. They are  however subject to breakdowns and should not be relied on. Check the web for the VISA ATM locator page or the MasterCard ATM locator web page for the addresses of ATMs around the world.

Credit Cards

Credit cards are not widely accepted and can only be used in major hotels, airlines, car hire agencies - always check in advance. Credit cards and debit cards should be used with caution due to the potential for fraud and other criminal activity.  Local advice indicates that travellers should avoid using credit cards as transactions will be converted at the official government bank rate rather than the 'real' rate used by local people. Seek advice from local tour operators and travel experts as soon as you arrive in the country.

Travellers Cheques

Traveller's cheques are rarely accepted by banks or exchange bureau.

Other Information

Travellers leaving the country can not take out more than USD $ 1,000 or ZWD $5,000,000 in cash or ZWD $5,000,000 in bearer's cheques.
