Money, Currency and Cards in Zambia

Local Currency

Zambian Kwacha (ZMK)

General Advice

It's best to come into the country with a combination of cash and travellers cheques in US dollars or British pounds which can be exchanged in main towns.

Money Exchange

US dollars, UK pounds, Euro or South African Rand can be exchanged in banks in all major towns or foreign exchange bureau.

ATM Availability

ATMs are becoming more widely available. However they are subject to breakdowns and should not be relied upon. Check the VISA ATM locator page or the MasterCard ATM locator web page for the addresses of ATMs around the world.

Credit Cards

Credit cards are not widely accepted outside large towns or tourists areas - always check in advance. Credit cards and debit cards should be used with caution due to the potential for fraud and other criminal activity.

Travellers Cheques

Traveller's cheques in US dollars, pounds sterling and euros are accepted and can be changed in all banks and exchange bureau. Travellers cheques attract a commission when changing to other currencies.

Other Information

The Zambian currency fluctuates quite regularly. Most used note denominations are K500 and K1000, K5000 and K10000. Nobody uses Ngwee coins any more as they are worthless. If you are offered an exchange on the black market at the borders, excercise extreme caution as the dealers are notorious for cheating you without you even realising it.
