Money, Currency and Cards in South Africa

Local Currency

Rand (ZAR)

General Advice

Most international currencies are accepted, though hard currencies such as US dollars, Euros or British Pounds are recommended. ATM’s are widely available and provide the quickest way of obtaining local currency. 1 Rand = 100 Cents.

Money Exchange

Foreign currency can be easily exchanged at major banks and foreign exchange counters, and at some hotels. Banking hours are from 0900 to 1530 Mon-Fri and 0900 to 1100 Saturdays.

ATM Availability

ATM machines are widely available in all main towns. For more information check with your bank or you can also check the VISA ATM locator page or the MasterCard ATM locator page on the web for the addresses of ATMs around the world.

Credit Cards

Credit cards are widely accepted in all major outlets but should be used with caution due to the potential for fraud.

Travellers Cheques

Traveller's cheques can be easily exchanged at major banks and foreign exchange counters.

Other Information

A value-added tax (VAT) receipt (separate from normal sales receipts) can be requested when purchasing goods. VAT on purchases other than food, accommodation and travel is refundable at international airports, but the process is not automatic. VAT officials may ask to inspect goods and VAT receipts. Bank drafts are then issued for the VAT amount. VAT reimbursement procedures take a considerable amount of time.
