Money, Currency and Cards in Réunion

Local Currency

Euro (EUR)

General Advice

Like France, Reunion has the Euro as its currency. ATM cash withdrawal machines are common throughout the island and generally reliable. Credit cards are widely accepted.

Money Exchange

British pounds and US Dollars cash can be exchanged in major banks though bank charges can tend to be high. Banks are usually open from Monday to Friday from 0800 to 1600.

ATM Availability

Most banks and post offices have ATMs, however there are few available inland and these are not always reliable so it is always best to carry plenty of euros when travelling inland.

Credit Cards

Credit cards are widely accepted in all major outlets but should always be used with caution due to the potential for fraud.

Travellers Cheques

These are not always accepted, even in banks.

Other Information

1 Euro = 100 Cents. Notes come in 5, 10, 20, 50, 100, 200 and 500 denominations. Coins in 1, 2 Euro and 1, 2, 5, 10, 20 and 50 Cents.
