Money, Currency and Cards in Mali

Local Currency

CFA Franc BCEAO (XOF)

General Advice

The West African CFA can be used in several other West African countries. It is not compatible with the Central African CFA and is directly linked to the Euro.

Money Exchange

Money can be changed in the majority of Mali's banks although the process can often be time consuming.  Large supermarkets and upmarket restaurants will often change cash for you.

ATM Availability

There are very few ATM machines in the country, though they do exist in larger towns and cities.  For more information check the Visa ATM locator, the MasterCard ATM locator or the American Express ATM locator for the addresses of ATMs around the world.

Credit Cards

These are not yet widely accepted in the country and should not be relied upon.

Travellers Cheques

Travellers cheques can be changed in Bamako and other main towns. The rate is not usually as high as the rate for cash exchange. Euros and US Dollars are the most easily changed major currencies.

Other Information

CFA notes are available in 10,000, 5,000, 2,000 and 1,000 denominations. Coins are available in 500, 200, 100, 50, 25, 10, 5 and 1 denominations.
