Money, Currency and Cards in Maldives
General Advice
Maldivian Rufiya (MVR; symbol MRf) = 100 laari. Notes are issued in denominations of MRf500, 100, 50, 20, 10 and 5. Coins in denominations of MRf2 and 1, and 50, 25, 10, 5, 2 and 1 laari.
If you are staying at one of the island resorts then you won’t need to carry money at all as everything will be billed to your room and you can settle up when you leave with cash (US Dollars are best) or credit cards (American Express, Visa and MasterCard are recommended).
It's best to carry some cash with you in either US Dollars, Pound Sterling or Euros. You can exchange money into Maldivian Rufiya at resorts, hotels and banks and you will generally only need local currency when visiting or staying in Male and using local shops and services away from the tourist areas.
Money Exchange
Major currencies such as US Dollars, Pounds Sterling and Euros can be exchanged at banks, tourist resort islands, hotels and leading shops.
ATM Availability
ATM’s are not available at resorts. ATM’s are available on Male but they are only for locals and do not accept foreign credit or debit cards. For more information check the Visa ATM locator, the MasterCard ATM locator or the American Express ATM locator for the addresses of ATMs around the world.
Credit Cards
Most island resorts, hotels, local and souvenir shops will accept American Express, Diners Club, Master Card and Visa however arrangements vary from island to island.
Travellers Cheques
Travellers’ cheques are rarely used but are accepted at resorts and hotels but will be subject to the usual charges. If taking travellers cheques, US dollars are recommended to avoid further charges.
