Local Currency

Libyan Dinar (LYD)

General Advice

Most establishments and businesses in Libya rely on cash only. The Libyan Dinar is available in 20, 10, 5, 1, 1/2 and 1/4 dinar notes; 100, 30, 20, 10, 5 and 1 coins.

ATM Availability

There are only a few ATM machines in main cities and these should not be relied upon.  For more information check the Visa ATM locator, the MasterCard ATM locator or the American Express ATM locator for the addresses of ATMs around the world.

Credit Cards

Credit cards are not widely accepted in Libya. 

Travellers Cheques

Travellers cheques are generally not accepted in Libya.

Other Information

On arrival in Libya you should be carrying at least USD1000 in foreign currency (please check with your Tour Organiser for exceptions to this rule).
