Money, Currency and Cards in Indonesia

Local Currency

Rupiah (IDR)

General Advice

Rupiah (IDR; symbol Rp).
Notes are issued in denominations of Rp100,000, 50,000, 20,000, 10,000, 5,000, 1,000 and 500; coins in denominations of Rp1,000, 500, 100, 50 and 25.

Credit cards are accepted in the main tourist areas however this is still a country where cash is king. It is best to carry cash in small denominations (especially in more remote areas) with the US$ most widely and easily convertible. ATMs exist in larger towns and cities but are fewer elsewhere.

Money Exchange

The easiest currency to exchange is the US$ and the Euro. Carry smaller denomination notes and exchange at banks and official money changers – check a number of locations as they all differ.

ATM Availability

ATMs are widely available in towns and cities but not in remote or rural areas. For more information check the Visa ATM locator, the MasterCard ATM locator or the American Express ATM locator for the addresses of ATMs around the world.

Credit Cards

American Express, MasterCard, Visa, Diners Club and Eurocard are widely accepted in Jakarta and the main tourist areas.

Travellers Cheques

Easily exchanged at banks and larger hotels however they will be subject to the usual exchange rate charges. Travel with US$ cheques and be prepared for poorer rates than with cash.
