Money, Currency and Cards in Croatia

Local Currency

Croatian Kuna (HRK)

General Advice

Kuna (HRK; symbol Kn) = 100 Lipa. Notes are in denominations of Kn1,000, 500, 200, 100, 50, 20, 10 and 5. Coins are in denominations of Kn25, 5, 2 and 1, and 50, 20, 10, 5, 2 and 1 lipa.

Travelling with a debit or credit card avoids the need to travel with large amounts of cash and as ATMs are readily available in all resorts, towns and cities and in banks, supermarkets and airports, it is the most convenient method of currency in Croatia.

Money Exchange

All major Western currencies are easily exchanged for local currency. The best place to exchange money is at a bank or bureau de change, some post offices also have exchange desks. Money can be changed in hotels but the rate is often much lower.

ATM Availability

ATMs are readily available in all resorts, towns and cities and in banks, supermarkets and airports but may be harder to find on some of the smaller less visited islands. For more information check the Visa ATM locator, the MasterCard ATM locator or the American Express ATM locator for the addresses of ATMs around the world.

Credit Cards

American Express, Diners Club, MasterCard and Visa are widely accepted in most hotels and restaurants in larger cities but are generally not accepted for private accommodation or in rural areas. Credit cards and debit cards should be used with caution due to the potential for fraud and other criminal activity.

Travellers Cheques

Traveller's cheques in US dollars, pounds sterling and euros are widely accepted and can be changed in all banks and exchange bureaus. If taking travellers cheques, to avoid additional exchange rate charges, traveller's cheques in US Dollars, Pounds Sterling or Euros are recommended.

Other Information

It is hard to re-convert Kuna once you have left Croatia though some places in Slovenia or Hungary may accept it. Keep receipts to reconvert kuna to foreign currency at a bank or bureau de change before leaving the country.

Banking hours are Monday-Friday 07:00-19:00 hours, Saturday 07:00-13:00 hours.
