Money, Currency and Cards in Azores

General Advice

Euros are the official currency in the Azores. There are notes in denominations of €500, €200, €100, €50, €20, €10 and €5 and coins in denominations of €2, €1, 50 cent, 20 cent, 10 cent, 5 cent, 2 cent and 1 cent. There are 100 cents to €1.

Money Exchange

You are best to take euros with you or change currency at banks in the Azores. Traveller’s cheques have very high commission rates so should be avoided.

ATM Availability

There are ATMs in all main towns.

Credit Cards

Credit cards are accepted in larger shops and restaurants but not in smaller ones where you will need cash.

Travellers Cheques

Travellers cheques are to be avoided due to the high transaction charges.
