Getting Around Svalbard

Buses

Buses to the airport coincide with flights or private transfers can be arranged.

Taxis

A limited number of taxis are available for local trips.

Car Hire

Car hire is limited in Svalbard, and generally unnecessary, as there are virtually no roads outside Longyearbyen.

Some snowmobiles are available in winter, but rates can be expensive. The minimum age for driving is 18 and an International Driving Permit or national driving licence and log book are required.

Driving

Traffic drives on the right.

Trains

There is one derelict ex-mining train in Ny Alesund, but it's going nowhere...

Boats

The most effective way to get around Svalbard is by boat.  Each summer, expedition cruises take groups to explore the remote coastlines and MS Nordsjernen offers a regular service to Ny Alesund departing Longyearbyen each week, but must be pre-booked with permission to disembark in Ny Alesund.

Other

There are limited internal flights between the key settlements of Svalbard, but these are usually reserved for key workers on the islands.
