Getting Around South Africa
Buses
Travel by public bus is the most common form of transport for many locals, but is generally not recommended for travellers (with the exception, perhaps, of major inter-city coach services). A variety of buses can be encountered whilst travelling in South Africa - from luxury double-decker coaches to small and overcrowded local minibuses.
Taxis
Taxis are available in all major towns and cities throughout South Africa. For safety’s sake make use of registered taxis only. Taxi drivers are normally tipped 10%.
Car Hire
For drivers with some overseas driving experience, touring by self-drive car is a very popular way of travelling around South Africa and its game parks. Most international rental companies are represented in the large cities with a range of smaller, more local companies. The minimum age for hiring a car ranges from 19 to 27, depending on company.
Driving
Driving is on the left-hand side of the road. Road conditions are generally excellent though care needs to be taken driving in major cities where doors should always be locked and windows fully wound up. Once out of major urban regions you will encounter few other vehicles due to the sheer size of the country.
Trains
With the exception of scheduled high class touring trains (such as the Blue Train) it is generally not recommended to make use of this type of transport due to personal security risks.
Boats
Due to a lack of major navigable waterways boat travel is not common within South Africa, other than the possibility of joining short excursions by boat, pleasure cruising out to sea and whale-watching.
