Getting Around Maldives

Buses

There are no buses on Male, the main island, which can be easily negotiated on foot or by bicycle.

Taxis

Taxis are available on Male. They can be ordered by telephone and you should agree the fare before you travel.

Car Hire

Car hire is not available.

Driving

As most islands are easily navigable by foot or bicycle, driving is not necessary.

Trains

There is no train service on the Maldives.

Boats

Transfers to resorts close to Male are made by speedboat.

Local boats, called dhoni, a traditional all-purpose vessel but now usually powered by a diesel engine, are the main form of local transport from Male to the outlying atolls.

Safari cruises now operate on larger dhoni which travel to more remote islands, this is especially popular with dive groups who live aboard and visit the more remote dive sites.
