Getting Around Croatia

Buses

Bus travel in Croatia is an inexpensive and efficient way to get around the country. Almost every town and even the smallest villages have a bus connection and/or a bus station. Bus stations in larger towns sell tickets and display timetables.

A good network of bus routes is further enhanced by new motorways in some parts of the country, thereby reducing journey times. Express buses cover longer distances and are very comfortable.

Taxis

Taxis can found in all the main towns and cities, and at airports. Taxis are usually located in front of bus/train stations or hotels and are metered.

Car Hire

International and local car hire companies can be found in cities, larger towns and resorts. The minimum driving age is 18.

Trains

Croatian Railways operate the train network in Croatia which connects all major cities except Dubrovnik. Train travel is inexpensive but is not as quick or the routes as comprehensive as the bus network. However, an upgrade of the track between Zagreb and Split now means that this journey can be done in 5 hours 25 minutes.

The train network is an efficient way to travel between Zagreb and the northern and inland parts of the country and to Rijeka and Pula in Istria and south to Split. There are no train services along the coast south of Split to Dubrovnik.

Passenger trains offer unreserved 2nd-class seating whilst the express trains have 1st and 2nd class seating plus sleeping berths on the overnight trains from Zagreb to Zadar and Split.

Boats

Jadrolinija, Semmarina, and SNAV are the main operators of car and passenger ferries and catamarans in Croatia, with regular connections between the main ports and the islands. A coastal service operates from Rijeka in the north to Dubrovnik in the south, via Split and Korcula.

During the summer ferry schedules are increased but in winter some lines are reduced or cancelled altogether.
