Getting Around Cook Islands

Buses

Cook Island Bus Passenger Transport Limited offer convenient low cost transport, operating a regular schedule around Rarotonga both clockwise and anti-clockwise.  Buses will pick up and drop off anywhere on request.

Clockwise bus departs Cook's Corner on the hour from 0700 to 1600 Monday to Saturday; Sundays 0800 to 1200 and 1300-1600.  

Evening bus departs Cook's Corner clockwise only, every hour Monday to Thursday and Saturday from 1800 to 2300, Fridays fro 1800 to 2200 and also midnight to 0200.  There is no Sunday evening service.

Anti-clockwise bus departs 25 minutes past each hour as above. 

 

Car Hire

Drivers are required to have a current Cook Islands Drivers Licence, which can be obtained from the Police Station in Avarua at a cost of NZ$10 on presentation of your own license. If you would like to hire a motor scooter, there is an additional charge of NZ$5 for the compulsory practical test.
 

Driving

Vehicles are driven on the left hand side of the road.  Maximum speed limit is 40 km per hour in town, 50 km per hour out of populated areas.

Trains

There are no trains on the Cook Islands.

Boats

Inter-island cargo ships travel once or twice a month between islands. There is no timetable for this service.
