The Philippines is the overlooked gem of Southeast Asia, a country where localised insurgency has tarnished a nation who has much to offer throughout its 7107 islands.
Luzon and the north of the country has the amazing rices terraces of the Ifugao people of the Cordillera region, along with the UNESCO-recognised Spanish colonial town of Vigan, volcanoes and on the neighbouring island of Mindoro the Mangyan tribes and hiking. On Martinduque there are lovely beaches and you can even take in a rodeo on Masbate!
Heading south to Visayas and the central Philippines the beaches are internationally renowned, with Boracay being the jewel in the crown. But if you want to explore beyond the beach there are the amazing cone-shaped Chocolate Hills and on Palawan an 8km long underground river. The world's smallest primate, the tarsier, can be seen in a reserve near Carmen and divers flock to Bohol.
Mindanao in the troubled south is still off limits for most travellers but here there are trekking and tribal experiences to be had. On Basilan there are stilt villages and waterfalls whilst Samal Island has more great beaches and huge caves filled with bats!
