With an Indian Ocean coastline stretching for almost 2,500 km between South Africa and Tanzania, Mozambique is an emerging African destination for adventure travellers in search of pristine powder white sand beaches fringed by palm trees, exotic offshore islands influenced by ancient traders, virgin coral reefs, and a myriad of underwater sea life.
Still recovering from a long-lasting conflict, the country is now one of Africa's bright stars and investment into the tourism industry and infrastructure continues at a pace. Mostly comprising of tropical coastal lowlands, distances and driving days are long for those who travel north from the golden dunes of Ponta do Ouro and the capital, Maputo, or south from the raging waters of the Ruvuma River.
Heavily influenced by its former Portuguese colonial occupiers, Mozambique has a distinct flavour and culture - a blend of Portuguese cuisine, language and architecture with the rawness of real Africa. Superb lodges have sprung up in recent years, and access to some of the world's best beaches has got easier with more frequent flights. Now is a great time to holiday in this beautiful southeast corner of Africa - you'll be warmly welcomed.
