Consisting of 607 islands, the Federated States of Micronesia extend 1,800 miles (2,900 km) across the archipelago of the Caroline Islands east of the Philippines. Located in the Pacific Ocean, north of Papua New Guinea, this island nation is a sovereign state in free association with the United States.
The four constituent island groups are Yap, Chuuk (called Truk until January 1990), Pohnpei (known as "Ponape" until November 1984), and Kosrae (formerly Kusiae). These four states are each represented by a white star on the national flag. The capital is Palikir, on Pohnpei.
Few travellers manage to reach these remote exotic islands, but those that do are guaranteed world-class diving holidays, palm-lined beaches and island exploration at its best.
