Comprising 18 islands in the heart of the Gulf Stream in the North Atlantic, the Faroe Islands are a little-known archipelago situated almost equidistant between Iceland, Scotland and Norway.

With a population largely descended from 9th century Viking settlers, the islands have been politically connected to Denmark since the 14th century and now enjoy a high degree of self-government.

Offering a wonderful diversity of breathtaking landscapes, a wide range of activities, an active music scene, vibrant festivals and a distinct local Viking architecture, the Faroe Islands are a destination for true island aficionados.

Along the shores of peaceful fjords and sounds lie the towns and villages of the Faroes, which sparkle in multi-coloured splendour against the deep green swath of cultivated pastureland surrounding them. Above them rise mountains with green sloping fells bounded by dark stony crags.

Faroe Islands: Faroe Islands, breathtaking views

I travelled to the Faroe Islands earlier this year and although I didn't see too much evidence of the sun, stunning scenery was still in adundance. I really enjoyed the views of the rugged coastline and hardy land, great 'mountains', lakes and ocean.

Very easy to get around on the islands and really is worth spending sometime to explore a range of the islands as each one offers something slightly different.

I had a fabulous time and will certainly go back again in the summertime.

Faroe Islands: Offbeat Atlantic Islands

I visited the Faroe Islands in 2001 on a trip organised by the Faroe Island Tourist Board - 5 days and 4 nights long. It was a wonderful trip despite a couple of days of rain and often cloudy skies. What struck me about these islands was the dramatic mountainous/volcanic scenery. Although the hills are quite bare in many places, when it rained, numerous gushing waterfalls formed cascading down to the sea and sounds - breathtaking. The cost of living wasn't too cheap but the people were very friendly and delighted to welcome visitors. Island hopping on the local ferries was fun, as was hiking from village to villagem, seeing 1000's of puffins and witnessing almost day-long sunlight. I'll return one day - perhaps island hopping north from the Shetlands next time!
