Crete considers itself a proudly independent part of Greece, though it is actually a microcosm of the country. From the ancient culture of Europe’s oldest civilization (Minoan), Crete has been touched and influenced by Greeks, Romans, Venetians, Turks and today tourists travel here from around the world.
From the ancient archaeological site of Knossos, to the walled city of Chania (Hania), with its narrow, twisting alleyways, peaceful harbour and a distinctive atmosphere, Crete is also home to some of Greece’ s most beautiful beaches and several mountain ranges, such as the Lefka Ori (White Mountains) in Western Crete. The limestone rock has been worn through the higher land across the island to create numerous impressive gorges, of which the Samaria is the most famous – and popular.
The flora of Crete is magnificent. Many species are endemic to the island and Crete in Spring is an unforgettable array of colourful flowers. As an agricultural country, Crete is virtually self-sufficient. Olives are grown on much of the island and the country produces one of the world’s best olive oils - Cretans would say THE world’s best. Orchards of citrus fruit, particularly oranges, are widespread.
No introduction to Crete would be complete without mention of the food and drink. The ‘Cretan Diet’ is considered by many nutritionists to be the world’s most healthy and – unlike many islands – vegetarians are catered for well. In western Crete few evening meals are considered complete without ending with a glass of the owner’s raki (a type of schnapps) – “for me”.
Cretans offer a genuinely warm and friendly welcome – particularly when you venture off the beaten track.

A great place to visit. The description here says it all!
Each time we come we keep finding new reasons to return. Like 'Anchorage' - a great taverna in Sougia on the south coast. Try their 'Taste of Sea' - a sort of upside-down fisherman's pie.
