The archipelago of the Canary Islands is made up of seven main islands, forming Spain’s southernmost autonomous community – Islas Canarias.
With dramatic landscapes, clear warm seas and beautiful beaches, the Canary Islands are enormously popular with tourists from all over the world, particularly those seeking the Winter Sun.
Lying just 60 km off the west coast of Africa, the Canary Islands are over 1000 km south of mainland Spain. The main islands of “Las Canarias” are Tenerife, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote, Fuerteventura, La Palma, La Gomera and El Herro. The status of regional capital is shared by the cities of Santa Cruz de Tenerife and Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.
The Canary Islands were formed by location over a volcanic hotspot beneath the Atlantic Ocean, and each of the individual islands’ natural geological features and unique vegetation reflect their volcanic past. El Tiede in Tenerife is perhaps the most striking natural feature – the highest mountain in Spain (3718 m) will often remain snow capped until late in the year.
