An unspoilt jewel in the Caribbean, the island of Bonaire is one of three islands (Aruba, Bonaire, and Curacao) which belong to the Netherlands Antilles.
Located about 75 kilometres to the north of the Venezuelan coast, Bonaire is the second-largest island, at 38km long and at its widest point, 11km wide. The island has remained unspolit in order to preserve its wonderful coral, beautiful beaches and safe waters and its whole coastline has been preserved as a marine sanctuary.
This relaxed and laid back island has therefore become one of the best places in the Caribbean for diving and snorkelling and with its easterly trade wind, climate conditions are ideal for sailing and windsurfing.
Off the coast from the capital of Kralendijk lies the island Klein Bonaire (Small Bonaire), a protected wildlife reserve. The island is surrounded by a coral reef and is home to at least 76 species of plants and 55 species of animals.
As well as water-sports the island also offers fantastic hiking and biking trails within the Washington-Slagbaai National Park which covers almost a fifth of the island. Birdlife on the island is prolific with around 170 different species of birds including a large population of flamingos.
