Blessed with an embarrassment of natural riches, the tiny country of Belize is a Mecca for nature lovers, archaeologists and adrenaline junkies alike.
Birdwatchers flock to places such as Crooked Tree Wildlife Sanctuary and Shipstern Nature Reserve to see some of the 500 odd species of bird that have been recorded here, while those who want to see larger jungle mammals can try Cockscomb Wildlife Sanctuary or the Community Baboon Sanctuary.
Scuba divers have the pick of some of the most renowned dive sites on the planet, such as the Great Blue Hole and The Elbow; while snorkelers can enjoy the wonderfully rich marine life nearer the surface of the UNESCO Natural World Heritage Barrier Reef. Rafters and kayakers can choose from the many rivers in the Cayo District and cavers can enjoy the sculptured, karst landscape here too. In fact, most adventure sports can be found here in Belize.
For those more interested in a cultural holiday, there are wonderful Mayan ruins dotted all over Belize, such as Lamanai or Altun Ha plus a chance to stay in a modern Mayan village, or hear Garifuna drumming or witness Mennonite farming.
And for those who simply want to relax and get away from it all, there are wonderful beaches, deserted islands, peaceful lodges on coral atolls or in the rainforest – all made more relaxing by the infectious, friendly, laidback attitude of the locals.
Not bad for a country the size of Belgium.
