The Azores Bullfinch (pyrrhula Murina) project is carried out by SPEA (The Portuguese Society for the study of Birds). There are estimated to be just 100 breeding pairs found in a small area in the forests in the north east of São Miguel. These are currently threatened by the loss of native vegetation and their habitat through forestry and farming.
