Azerbaijan is an Islamic country which is located in Eastern Europe and bordered by the Caspian Sea, Russia, Georgia, Armenia and Iran. It is an oil rich nation as well as a strategically important one within the Caucasus; however, it also has plenty to offer the intrepid traveller. The scenery here is simply stunning with the Caucasus Mountains, lush verdant valleys and arid semi-desert. It is also home to a wealth of cultural attractions though.
Most visitors to Azerbaijan base themselves in the capital, Baku, but head out of the city to see such sights as the Stone and Bronze Age petroglyphs at Gobustan, the mosques and caravanserais at Sheki and the Persian mountain town of Lahic.
Although it is currently rarely visited, Azerbaijan is a gem that is waiting to be discovered.
