The Alte Feste Fort on Robert Mugabe Avenue, is one of the oldest buildings in Windhoek, with its cornerstone laid in 1890 and the first section completed in 1892. It served as military barracks and as the military headquarters in 1915 and then as a hostel for the Windhoek High School in 1935.

In 1957 it was declared a Namibian national monument and is now the home of the National Museum where the Historical Independence Collection, reflecting events leading up to Independence can be seen. The museum gives the chance to explore Namibia’s fascinating cultural and historical past and to gain a greater understanding of this young democratic country.
