Walking west of Puerto Villamil lies the beautiful long beach named Playa de Amor, and a short distance inland several wetland lagoons (Humedales). This is the best area in Galapagos for viewing migratory birds and the brackish lagoons are often frequented by Pink Flamingoes, Common Stilts, Gallinules and White-Cheeked Pintails, particularly during the nesting season (November to April).

At the end of the road, about two hours walk from the town, stands the sobering Muro de las Lagrimas (Wall of Tears). Built on the site of an American World War II base, some 300 prisoners toiled in the late 1940s and 1950s, under the guard of harsh wardens, to build their own prison using the only local materials available – sharp volcanic rocks. A place of suffering and pain, many prisoners died before a revolt in 1959, saw the site abandoned as prison colony and today remains exactly as it was left, an unfinished wall 190 metres long, 6 metres wide and 9m high.
