Famous throughout Oman the Wadi Shab is a big draw for those making a loop from Muscat to the Wahiba Sands and back along the coast via Sur and is an absolute must.

Nestled in between two mountains the entrance to the wadi is a lush green. Walk through the steep sided canyon following a route past iridescent pools, farmed patches of land a lovely green, waterfalls, all overhung with palm trees. At the end of the gorge is a stunning pool with a difficult, narrow entrance accessible only by swimming.

If you have the time you can hike up to villages that lie beyond, out of sight; a local guide is needed to find the way.
