Located just across the Pasion River from Alta Verapaz, the archaeological site of Cancuen was the ancient Maya customs port to the river trading system in the tropical jungle region of Peten. Cancuen was a major political and economic player in trade and war as it controlled the entry of raw materials from the highlands. Excavations have uncovered an impressive royal palace built between 765 and 790 A.D. as well as a mass grave containing the remains of the royal family of Cancuen whose rule came to an abrupt end.
