Sitting beneath Volcan Alcedo, in 1954 Urbina Bay was subject to a major uplift of the Earth’s crust. Rising almost 4 metres, almost one square mile of the sea bed of this shallow bay were pushed upwards, dramatically extending the coast line of Isabela Island by over a kilometre and leaving many marine species stranded.
Skeletons of sharks and lobsters were found here after, and schools of fish were found trapped in rock pools, unable to return to the ocean and even today it is possible to find the ruminants of shells and urchins far from the water’s edge.
A trail leads across the uplifted bay towards the old beach where sea turtles nest and poison apple trees grow. Galapagos penguins, flightless cormorants and brown pelicans can also be found here.
