Aswan was famous for its granite with huge amounts being used in Pharaonic times to decorate and embellish monuments. The quarries a few kilometres south of Aswan contain the Unfinished Obelisk which would – if finished – at 42metres long have been the single largest piece of stonework ever fashioned. Unfortunately a flaw was seen in the stone and here it lies complete except for its inscriptions. Who it was being made for remains a mystery.
