Picked out at night by the glow of floodlights the Tombs of the Nobles are cut into rocks overlooking the west bank of Aswan. Dating from the Old and Middle Kingdoms the tombs were intended as the final resting place of princes and local rulers. There are several dozen honeycombing the rocks but only six tombs are at present open to visitors. These have well-preserved reliefs (nos. 25 and 26, Mekhu and Sabni) and pillared interiors (no. 31, that of Sarenput II, arguably the most impressive).
