Set up by the United Fruit Company in 1925 as a research station for its banana production, the Lancetilla Botanical Garden, following the river of the same name, has evolved into the second largest tropical botanical garden in the world.

Today, the Lancetilla Botanical Garden boasts one of the most pre-eminent collections of fruit trees, flowering trees, hardwoods, palms, bamboo and other assorted medicinal and poisonous plants in Latin America.
