The town of Tamegroute is a 10-15 minute drive south from Zagora and is famous as a great centre of Islamic learning. Founded in the 17th century by Mohammed Bou Nasri, the influence of the town extended right throughout southern Morocco.

Worthy of making an excursion from Zagora, a collection of priceless manuscripts are displayed in one of the rooms of the ksar - known as the Koranic Library. Hiring a local guide may make a visit to the ksar more rewarding during a 1 hour guided tour. After an explanation of some of the most important manuscripts, a typical walking tour visits the courtyard and entrance to the tomb of Mohammed Bou Nasri, and is followed by a walk through the atmospheric passageways of the ksar. After a visit to a potters' workshop, a tour ends at a Tamegroute ceramic shop.
