Located on the west coast of Isabela, below the Darwin Volcano, Tagus Cove was named after a British vessel that moored here in the 1800s. Names of ships since these times have been carved in nearby rocks, testament to the fact that it was a favoured anchorage for whalers and pirates.

The waters of the Bolivar Channel are the coldest most productive in the Galapagos, due to the upwelling of the Cromwell Current. Dolphins and whales are often seen in the sea, whilst blue-footed boobies, pelicans, brown noddies, flightless cormorants, terns and penguins inhabit the rocky cliffs, striped due to the many layers of ash compacted over time.

Here a pathway leads up through the palo santo forest towards the rim of the volcanic crater in which lies the emerald-coloured saline Darwin Lake. Passing Darwin’s finches and flycatchers, the path continues into a drier area of aa lava with spectacular views of the Darwin and Wolf Volcanoes, as well as the inviting bay where our boat is anchored.
