The small island of Sombrero Chino is located a short distance to the south east of Santiago, and its name derives from its shape, resembling a ‘Chinese Hat’.
The clear blue waters between the two islands are a magical place for snorkelling, with a wide variety of marine life, including Galapagos penguins, passing through the channel in their search for food.
Visitors to the island itself are heavily restricted by the National Park Authority and only boats carrying less than twelve passengers are permitted to land here. Those who are lucky enough to make the visit land on a beautiful white sandy beach before walking upon the fragile basalt landscape between lava cactus, Sally Lightfoot crabs, lava lizards and marine iguanas. Reaching the top of the trail there are marvellous views of the bay below.
