Sohar was the capital of Oman many centuries ago and legend has it that it was named after the great grandson of Noah. A major trading port and said by some to be the birthplace of Sindbad the Sailor (a claim doubted by the people of Basra in Iraq) it has always been important.

The city’s fort was built sometime between the 1st century and the 8th century; given the settlement’s strategic location it is likely that some defensive structure was here at the earlier date. What we see today dates from the 18th century onwards. Located on the beach the position of the fort is impressive and comprises of a keep/museum (containing weapon’s, seafaring equipment and local finds), the Wali’s office and lovely gardens; it is the only Omani fort that is whitewashed.
