Site of the only Pharaonic remains outside of mainland Egypt Serabit al Khadem was the turquoise mines of Egypt’s ancient rulers. A temple dedicated to Hathor, the cow-headed god, can be found at the site and whilst not as impressive as those of the Nile Valley is nonetheless worth a visit if exploring the Sinai on an organised 4WD tour. Some climbing is required to reach the temple which has stelae and stone baboons along with inscriptions that mention Hatshepsut and Tuthmosis III.
