The Maxange Caves were discovered at the site of a quarry in Le Buisson de Cadouin, in August 2000. Consisting of two chambers connected by a short tunnel, the unique concentration of calcite formations makes the site the only one of its kind in the world.

The roof and some of the walls of the main chamber are covered with the type of crystallisation called “eccentric”. The rareness and prolific nature of this type of crystallisation is what makes the site unique and sets it apart from other caves in the region.
