Travelling through seven vegetative zones from the warm coast to the mist-covered heights of the island at 865 metres, the lush southern highlands of Santa Cruz contain several small agricultural communities including Bellavista and Santa Rosa. Here farmers cultivate fruit, vegetables and cattle amongst the fertile volcanic soils that make up the lush highlands of Santa Cruz.
An essential day trip from Puerto Ayora, the region boasts much of interest including the El Chato tortoise reserve, where these fascinating creatures can be seen in the wild. Learning more about the natural history of the island, several large lava tubes – up to 3 kilometers long – can be visited as well as Los Gemelos, a pair of volcanic craters known as ‘the twins' – look out for the rare vermillion flycatcher here.
