The highlands of San Cristóbal are not regularly visited by travellers, but for those who wish to spend some time staying on the island, there is the rare opportunity to explore without the need for a guide, as this is one of the few areas where one is not required. Options include hiking, renting a truck or taxi or hiring a bike to get around.

El Progresso is the small town established in the late 1800s, where Manuel Cobos, until he was killed, treated prisoners as slaves whilst developing sugar cane and coffee plantations. San Joaquin Hill, the island's highest point, can be reached from here.

Continuing from El Progresso toward the top of the extinct volcano offers spectacular views of the island and El Junco Lagoon, one of the few fresh water lakes in Galapagos. It is possible to follow a trail through the lush plant life and around the rim of the volcano.
