A short drive from its near neighbour at Nakhl, Rustaq is another impressive fort that seems to loom straight from the pages of the Arabian Nights tales. Rustaq was once the seat of power in Oman being capital for some 150 years under the Ya’arubi imams and from the 17th century the Al Bu Said dynasty. Its foundations are much older with local knowledge saying it was here before the dawn of Islam.

The fort has suffered from water damage on several occasions but repairs are generally swift and comprehensive meaning the fort remains in good condition. It comprises of 3 levels and 4 towers; like Nakhl it is furnished with local crafts, rugs and cushions etc; it has some fine ceilings and the wooden balustrade around the upper area has been restored.

A respected mosque can be found here, the Bayadha, which has 32 pillars. Rustaq souq too is worth a visit; early mornings are best as it’s all but over by around midday.
