The Royal Flying Doctor Service is an Australian icon and a world first. With the help of Alf Traegers pedal radio and advice from one of Australia's most famous pioneer aviators Hudson Fysh, the Reverend John Flynn's Aerial Service took to the sky on 5 May, 1928 to help sick and injured outback pioneers. Flynn of the Inland, as he affectionately became known, would be proud of the service he founded. The organisation now services an area of more than 7,150,000 square kilometres providing a Mantle of Safety to an area larger than Western Europe. The service now has 27 bases Australia wide and maintains 50 aircraft.
