Dating from the 12th century these impressive ramparts surround the medina and stretch to a total of over 16 km in length and include 20 gates and 200 towers. The walls can be up to 2m wide and in places up to 9m high. A walk around the ramparts is best either first thing in the morning or the evening when the sun is low and the pisé walls take on a lovely ochre colour.

Ramparts of Marrakech: Take the walk

The site of the wall surrounding the old town is really quite impressive. It is easy to drive in and out of the old town without taking much notice, but spend a few minutes walking by the wall and you can imagine the effort it took to build in the first place - some nice carvings in some places too. It would be quite an impressive walk to follow it all the way round - one that we did not do!!
