The Ramesseum is the funerary temple of Ramses II, built to impress all who gazed upon it and persuade the gods of Rameses rightful place in the afterlife. Built by Ramses II on the site of a temple constructed by Seti I the Ramesseum remains impressive even though a miscalculation in the reach of the Nile’s annual floodwaters meant that it was perhaps less permanent than Ramses expected, being much damaged. It consists of a variety of courtyards, columns an Astronomical Room, the remains of Seti I’s temple and inscriptions as ever for Ramses II detailing the ‘King of Kings’ victory over the Hittites at Kadesh.
