The old, colonial centre of Quito is located in the south of the city on at the base of the valley. Traditional low, painted buildings line the steep cobbled roads, and there seems to be a church or a square around every corner.
Ecuadorian Colonial Art combines de European Renaissance and Baroque styles with the indigenous influences that created the famous Quito School of Art, one of the most important in the Americas. Here you can visit a number of excellent museums, monasteries, and enjoy the carved stone facades and golden altars of its many churches.
Don’t miss the Plaza San Francisco, Plaza del Teatro, Plaza de la Independencia and Plaza Santa Domingo squares or the churches of La Compañia, San Francisco and La Merced. The best museums are the Museo de la Cuidad and the Museo Nacional de Arte Colonial with its fine collection of art.
