The largest of the stelae at Quirigua, stela E, stands thirty-five feet (11 meters) tall, weighs an estimated 130,000 pounds (almost 60,000 kilograms), and has sculptures covering its 8-meter panels. It is amazing to think how the Maya somehow transported enormous stones through the jungle, made intricate carvings with only rudimentary stone tools, and raised these huge sculptures to their present vertical positions.
